Cindy Manalang Obituary
Cindy Ohlson Manalang

Cindy Ohlson Manalang, 50, died in her Oakland home on Thursday, Dec. 5, with family and friends close at hand. Cindy didn't need a bucket list, because she found joy at every stage of her life.  She was an AFS exchange student during high school in Marquina, Spain; she traveled Europe by train and lived in London after graduating from the University of California at Berkeley; then lived in Boston for 5 years.  She worked at PeopleSoft, where she met the wonderful man who would become her husband – Rich Manalang – and they traveled through Europe for 6 weeks before marrying in 2002. Three years later, they had Colin and Luke. Cindy was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2006, but lost none of her zest for life – even a few years ago, she still seemed like the happiest, healthiest person in the room. She approached a life with cancer with characteristic humor and grit – she called the UCSF Cancer Center "Cheers" because "everybody knows my name" – and raised nearly $30,000 for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.  She continued to keep her heart light and put it where it mattered. She is survived by her husband and sons, parents David and Betty Ohlson of Moraga, brother Tom Ohlson and nephews Tyler and Lars of Orinda, and brother Michael Ohlson, sister-in-law Sharon, and nephews Jarryd, Spencer, and Derek of San Francisco. Many people loved her, and all were touched by her fearlessness and grace. Donations welcome at METAvivor, UCSF Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center, and Breast Cancer Action.
