Elizabeth Porte Shapiro
died peacefully at home on November 4, 2012. Born Elizabeth Matile Porte in Washington, DC on June 22, 1943, Betty was the daughter of William Lyon Porte and Matile Griswold Porte. She grew up in San Antonio, Texas and Colorado Springs, Colorado, and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1965. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Betty moved to Northern California immediately after graduation, working first as an elementary school teacher and then as an administrative assistant at the Chartered Bank of London. In 1968 she met A. Horton Shapiro and they were married on August 24, 1968. Betty worked for Loomis Sayles & Co until 1970, when daughter Katie was born. In 1972, daughter Emily was born. Betty & Horton moved to Piedmont in 1972 and have lived there ever since. In the early years, Betty was a member of the Junior League of SF and the Junior League of Oakland-East Bay. Later, she was a member and President of Piedmont Garden Club, member and President of Piedmont Beautification Foundation, member of Hoe & Hope Garden Club and the Town & Country Club. She was an excellent skier and inspired her family to ski better. She spent many competitive hours on the golf course at Claremont Country Club and at various courses in Hawaii, but her highest priority was always her adoring family. Betty leaves behind her loving husband of 44 years, A. Horton Shapiro, her two daughters, Katie S. Harmon and Emily C. Johnson, son-in-law Andrew Johnson, and four grandchildren: Trevor Harmon, Audrey Harmon, Max Johnson and Grace Johnson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to Piedmont Beautification Foundation, Piedmont City Hall, 120 Vista Avenue, Piedmont, CA 94611. Arrangements for a memorial service are pending.
