Ardent believer one person can make a difference


Frances Brown, 99, a Kensington resident for over 50 years died on December 4, 2013 in El Cerrito. Born in Newton, Mass. on August 8, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Gertrude Muther. Frances is pre-deceased by her siblings, Robert Muther and Barbara Lacy; her husband Edgar Brown; and their son Walter Ferris Brown and his wife Karen Meub Brown. Loving grandmother of Caroline Korejko (Vermont); Jennifer Sime (Montana); and Katherine Brown (Colorado). Great grandmother of Cooper and Sullivan. Graduate of Newton High School and Skidmore College, Fran served as a health aide during WWII. She taught mathematics at Berkeley High School from 1960-1979. An avid reader, gardener, hiker, patron of the arts and traveler, Fran was certified in Jin Shin Jyutsu and a member of the Sierra Club. She was a long-time volunteer for Read-Aloud and Meals on Wheels. Fran leaves many cherished friends and family who will remember her as a smart, fun, fit, loving, loyal, independent, strong-willed, passionate, resilient and inspirational woman. Donations in her memory may be made to the GLIDE Foundation, 330 Ellis St., San Francisco CA 94102 and condolences can be sent c/o Caroline Brown Korejko, PO Box 128, Alburgh, Vermont 05440. An informal gathering honoring Fran's life will be held in the Fireside Room at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, 1 Lawson Road, Kensington, on Tuesday, December 17th, 3-5 p.m.
