Frederick Dodson Obituary
Frederick Porter Dodson
June 12, 1953
March 25, 2013

After a hard fought battle with cancer, Frederick Porter Dodson passed away at his home March 25, 2013.

Fred was born June 12, 1953 in Kittery, Maine, the first son of three children for pediatrician Dr. Albertus "Bud" Dodson and his wife Kathleen Roller Dodson.

Fred was active in sports throughout his youth and played basketball and football for the school teams in his hometown of Brainerd, Minnesota. He graduated from Brainerd High School in 1971, and graduated with a BA in Chemistry in 1975 from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN.

Fred loved working as a paramedic for several years while pursuing his graduate studies, and earned a Master's degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan in 1983.

Fred's career spanned almost 40 years in the healthcare management industry, from being one of the youngest hospital executives on record in Arizona, and growing to senior executive management and consultant. He ultimately specialized in network development, strategic planning, product design, and government programs.

Fred was known and respected as a top pro in his business. He had an uncanny talent for cutting to the heart of a problem and "fixing" what was broken. He was very generous with his knowledge, and especially loved mentoring and developing upcoming talent in healthcare management.

Fred loved to travel, paddle his canoe, and hike. He was an avid bicyclist and voracious reader, lover of good food and wine, and enthusiastic Cal rugby supporter.

Fred is survived by his wife Vicki Hurst, mother Kathleen Roller Dodson of Green Valley, AZ, sister Marianne Dodson Hayden of Tucson, AZ, and brother Benjamin "Benjie" Dodson of Blue River, CO.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held April 20 at the Moraga Country Club. A scholarship is being set up in Fred's name at Gustavus Adolphus College; contributions can be made to: Fred P. Dodson Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Gustavus Adolphus College, 800 West College Ave., St. Peter, MN, 56082.
