Gertrude Elizabeth Rutherford Our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and good friend passed in to God's loving embrace on Feb. 18, 2013, at home surrounded by her family. We have known her as both Trude and Gertrude, but mostly Mom. She fought courageously through diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer and other ailments that come with older age, and still managed to have a very good life.|
Although a long-time resident of Burlingame, Gertrude was born in San Francisco in 1923. An only child, she loved to roam her neighborhood in the Castro District. She graduated with the Commerce High School class of 1941 along with her self-described "gang" of eight close girlfriends. She kept in touch with them throughout her life, and especially Irene Rakestraw, San Mateo, whose friendship lasted for 72 years.
She was married in San Jose, California to John Perkins Rutherford in 1944 until he passed in 1998.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Estelle Schmid, her husband John Perkins Rutherford, and her daughter Ruth Marie Rutherford. Survivors include daughters Joan McCorkell, Plymouth, Mass., Nancy Prescott (Mark), Oakdale, Calif., Carol Cohen, Portland, Ore., Barbara Rutherford Crest (A. Bruce), Portland, Ore., Mark Rutherford, Georgetown, Calif. and Terri Rutherford. Arnold, Calif. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Gertrude was a parishioner of Our Lady of Angels since 1950. She was an active and loyal member of the Third Order, and she religiously attended mass every Sunday while she was able.
The family wishes to thank her extraordinary doctors Vincent Guidani, Bruce McAuley, Fred Lui, Lawerence Coskey, and John O'Holleron, and the nurses, and caregivers Violet Bensch and Sara Bensch for their excellent care, the daily caregivers, and all those who have offered prayers and their loving kindness.
A vigil shall be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at Crosby - N Gray & Co., 2 Park Rd. in Burlingame. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, March 1, at Our Lady of Angels Church, Hillside Dr., Burlingame. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. All those who know Gertrude are welcome to join the family and friends in the Our Lady of Angels Lower Hall for refreshments.
Gertrude was a beautiful woman of strength, character, great flair, and a heart with an endless capacity for love, empathy, resolve, and understanding. Please join us in lovingly sending her off to be with her Lord and God, family, relatives, friends, pets, and others who have preceded her in death.
Gertrude loved animals. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in her name to the Peninsula Humane Society. As a loyal member of OLA, the "Our Lady of Angels Capuchin Retirement Fund" is also worthy of contributions.
