James Leonard Kuhlman
June 14, 1918 - August 22, 2013
JAMES LEONARD KUHLMAN, born on June 14, 1918, was blessed with 95 years of longevity and passed away peacefully at home on August 22, 2013 while surrounded by family members. Born in Detroit, Michigan, to Albert and Marion Kinast Kuhlman, he was the fourth child of four boys. Jim graduated from Coolie High School in Detroit, joined the U.S. Navy in 1936, earned a medal of honor for his service in WWII and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
As owner of Kuhlman's Craftsmen Shop Jim led an active life in the San Carlos community since 1948, including being part of a local bowling team. People knew him as an avid antique and classic car enthusiast and for his love of back road adventures. Jim had a contagious entrepreneurial spirit.
Jim married Mary Roddy [dec.] in 1943, had one son Michael J. Kuhlman [dec.], and is survived by their four daughters: Marilyn Sartain (Dale), Kristina Sachs (Dennis Tarr), Karen Sapper (Howard), and Francine Lanser. He is also survived by his loving wife Velma Harding Kuhlman, to whom he wed in 1984; and her two daughters, Donna Martin (Allan) and Gayle Collins (Ron), and eight grandchildren: Melissa, Tricia, Meghan, Eva, Stephanie, Wendy, Brent [dec.] and Heather; and five great-grandchildren: Maggie, Marianna, Kira, Ruby, and Cassidy.
A Memorial Mass is being held at St. Charles Catholic Church, 880 Tamarack Ave., San Carlos, CA 94070 on Tuesday, September 10 at 2 PM with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
