Matt Toman

Oct. 12, 1923 – Jan. 14, 2014

Long time resident of Daly City, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at 90 years of age.  He now joins his wife Majda who preceded him in 1992.

He was born in a mountainous coal mining region of Slovenia and as a young man educated in Salesian schools where he became fluent in several languages.   His higher education was postponed by WWII where dad found himself fighting against communism.   After the war, he attended medical school in Italy, where he reunited with his childhood friend and both decided to immigrate to San Francisco in 1952.

During the late 50's and early 60's, he co-owned and operated Fat Boy BBQ at Ocean Beach, a colorful diner that served everyone from hippies to the SFPD.  Later, dad worked for the Jefferson Elementary School district for over 25 years and retired at the age of 72 in 1997.

We were honored to have dad live with us in San Mateo these past 10 years. He enjoyed the sun on the peninsula, gardening, reading, and specially keeping everyone on their toes.

Survived by his son Mark and daughter in-law Karen. Also, loving "Papa" to Christa, Matthew, and Katie.

Dad's favorite response when asked "How are you?"  always was, "Still alive!"  That's how he will remain in our hearts, "Still Alive!"

Our sincere gratitude goes out to the nurses, on the 4th floor of Peninsula Hospital, for their care and compassion.

According to dad's wishes, funeral services were private and interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a .
