Dr. Sulhi H. Yungul

1918 - 2012

Longtime Mill Valley resident Dr. Sulhi H. Yungul passed away in his sleep last July 7th, after a lengthy illness. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 20, 1918, Dr. Yungul was a Senior Staff Geophysicist at Chevron Resources Company in San Francisco at the time of his retirement in 1983.

In 1938 he won a full scholarship to study for one year at the Lycée Descartes in Tours, France, and was later awarded full sponsorship to study in the United States. He received his B.S. Degree from Montana Tech in 1943, his M.S. and professional degree of Geophysical Engineering (1944 and 1945) from the California Institute of Technology. It was while attending Cal-Tech that he met his wife Elizabeth. They were married in Ankara, Turkey while Dr. Yungul was fulfilling his sponsorship and military obligations.

Returning to the States in 1955, Dr. Yungul began his long association with Chevron that same year, earning his Ph.D. in Geophysics from Texas A&M University where he also held the position of Associate Professor.

Dr. Yungul's passions were current events, world history, gardening and the ocean. He loved to maintain his large collection of cactus and succulent potted plants and was an avid family photographer. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, three children, Patricia, Ron and Martin, and grandsons Ian and Charles. He was 93.
