William M Ballard

Apri. 22, 1928-Dec. 31, 2013

Passed away suddenly on New Year's Eve Day at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Bill was born April 22, 1928 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Ella and James Carrick Ballard. Bill continued to live in Knoxville until he joined the U.S Army in 1946 and proudly served in Korea. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1951 Bill settled in San Francisco. Bill worked at The Mark Hopkins Inter Continental Hotel in San Francisco. His position was listed as Doorman, and he was referred to as" official greeter". After 45 good years at "The Mark" Bill retired in 1999 and moved to Castro Valley. Bill's favorite pastime was playing golf. He was a past member of the Lincoln Park Men's Golf Club in San Francisco, and a proud current member of the Gold Nuts Golf Club in Castro Valley. The highlight of his golfing experiences was when he made a hole in one in 1999 on the 13 hole at the Willow Park Golf Course. In 2001 Bill and  his wife Betty purchased a winter home in Surprise Arizona which enabled him to enjoy playing golf year round. Bill's family surprised him with a 85th birthday party earlier this year at an Oakland A's/SF Giants baseball game at the Oakland Coliseum. It was a wonderful party that celebrated a milestone birthday. Bill will be greatly missed by his wife Betty and his daughter Rita and her husband Matthew Nolan. He will be fondly remembered by his granddaughter Kathleen Nolan, and grandson Brendan Nolan and his wife Sophie. He is survived by his sister, Betty Vaught in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is predeceased by his brothers: James Carrick (JC), George, Clarence, Edd , and sister: Ruby. Bill is also survived by sisters-in-law: Bonnie Emerson and Shirley Conner both of Modesto, CA. and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Eden Medical Center for their wonderful assistance with Bill and his family during his stay. Particular recognition would like to be paid to the staff of the Intensive Care Unit for their never ending attention to the needs of Bill and his family.
