WITT, Mary Ellen

Mary Ellen Witt passed away on January 2, 2014 at
Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, California. She is survived by her children, Alexis Witt and Jeff Witt.
Mary Ellen was the first born child of Ruth Madsen, and older sister to Nancy Cross and Steve Madsen. She was a resident of Whittier, California for the majority of her life, leaving only to obtain several degrees at Cal State Fullerton, University of California, Irvine, Penn State University, and the University of Illinois.
After marrying Hal Witt, she settled back down in Whittier to raise a family and take care of her mother, Ruth. Later in life she followed her mother into teaching – originally as a substitute teacher while obtaining her teaching credentials. During this period she taught at several local schools and after finishing the credential program, she took up a teaching position at Ceres, and later at Leffingwell Elementary Schools.
Over the course of her very full life, she was involved in PTA, GATE, School Site Council, CTA, Girl Scouts, Intercommunity Blind Center, Shelter's Right Hand, East Whittier Education Association (EWEA), and the Rio Hondo Citizen's Oversight Committee.
Mary Ellen was the consummate teacher, she worked for the betterment of students and teachers in all her various roles and responsibilities. She loved books and loved passing on her love of literature to those around her. When she wasn't reading, she was playing and winning card games of all sorts.
A service is being held at her residence and is open to the public. The service will be Saturday, January 11th starting at 4:00pm PST. Questions regarding the service can be directed to witt.alexis@yahoo.com or jeff.witt@gree.net. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to: Shelter's Right Hand P.O. Box 9304 Whittier, CA 90608.
