Dr. Charles O. Metzmaker
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Dr. Charles O. Metzmaker, 91, died at 2:25 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at St. John's Hospice.
Dr. Metzmaker was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Springfield, the son of Cecil and Freda Bramley Metzmaker. He married Therese Amrhein on Sept. 18, 1944, in Springfield.
He was a graduate of Springfield High School in 1940. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois, College of Medicine in 1946. After graduation from medical school, he served in the United States Department of Public Health Service Hospitals in Seattle, Wash., and Galveston, Texas.
Dr. Metzmaker was a well known and respected surgeon in Springfield and a Professor of General Surgery at Southern Illinois University College of Medicine in Springfield. He also served as Director of St. John's Hospital Trauma Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Cecil W. Metzmaker.
Dr. Metzmaker is survived by his wife, Therese; his daughter, Joan (husband, John) Fisher of Clark, Colo.; and four sons, Jeffrey (wife, Deborah) of Rutland, Maine, Peter (wife, Jan) of Whitefish, Mont., Michael (wife, Leeann) of Lino Lakes, Minn., and Joseph (wife, Karen) of Aurora, Colo.; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two more on the way!
Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Christ the King, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield.
Memorial Mass: 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Christ the King with Rev. Joseph Ring and Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz, co-celebrants.
Private family burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
