Dean W. Kessler

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Dean W. Kessler, 87, died at 2:25 a.m., Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at Concordia Skilled Care Facility.

He was born April 26, 1926, in Freeburg, Ill., to George and Anna (Weber) Kessler. He married Marie Groth on June 17, 1950.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Myra (infant) and Doris Valentine. Surviving him are his wife of 63 years, Marie; one daughter, Nancy Hoehn (Ron) of Texarkana, Texas; one son, Robert (Susan) Kessler of Champaign; four grandchildren: Leah and Shelby Roman and Alan and David Kessler, as well as two step-grandchildren, Devon and Savannah Hoehn. Mr. Kessler is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kessler was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on Guam during WWII.

He graduated from SIU in 1950. While teaching in Gilman, Ill., he received his Masters Degree from University of Illinois. Dean and Marie moved to Springfield in 1960 to work for District 186. When Lincoln Land Community College District was formed in 1968, Dean was hired as VP of Business Services, where he oversaw the building of the permanent campus. He retired in 1984. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church. Dean was a lifelong Cardinals fan.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 20, 2013, at First Congregational Church.

Memorial Service: 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 20, 2013, at First Congregational Church. Interment will be private at a later date at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for Lincoln Land Community College Foundation or First Congregational Church.
