Edward J. "Ed" Eck
SPRINGFIELD - Edward J. Eck, 87, lifelong resident of Springfield, IL, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away March 2, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his 9 children and wife, Eloise.
He was a graduate of Cathedral Boys High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in World War II, and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the Remagen Bridge. After graduating from St. Louis University with a B.S. in Accounting and minor in Philosophy, he was an accountant for 60 years, including 19 years at Allis Chalmers.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eloise; sons, Edward, Joseph (Marie), Stephen (Pam), Matthew (Angie) and Jerome, all of Springfield, and Ted (Talitha) of Los Angeles; daughters, Constance Berthold (Paul) of Charlotte, Jeannie Sollie (Steve) of Minneapolis and Carolyn of Chicago; 13 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He is also survived by brother, Bernard Eck of Elmhurst, IL; and sister, Mary Eck of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward F.; mother, Paul-ine; sister, Joan; and brother, Lawrence.
Ed was known as a big band enthusiast and big band dancer with wife, Eloise. He enjoyed raising and showing prize-winning dairy goats and making goat cheese for friends and family. He was his family's biggest soccer fan, avid Prairie Stars soccer supporter and one of the founding members of the Friends of the Prairie Stars. His greatest enjoyment was supporting his children and grandchildren in sports, music and dance.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, until the time of the Funeral Mass at 12:00 noon at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Rochester, IL, with Rev. Dean Probst celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
