Ernest A. Purnell
WINTER HAVEN, FL - Ernest A. Purnell, formerly of Springfield, Ill., passed away on Dec. 24, 2013. He was born in Granite City, Ill., on April 24, 1924. He was a veteran of WWII serving as a field medic with Company G of the 377th Infantry Medical Detachment of the 95th Division attached to George Patton's Third Army. During his service, which lasted from D-Day +4 to V-E Day, he was awarded two bronze stars for bravery. After his service he studied at the University of Illinois where he met his wife to be Elizabeth Irwin. They were married on September 27, 1947. Mr. Purnell operated Industrial Chemical Supply Company for 23 years. Besides being a Master Mason, he was an Elder and Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Ill., and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winter Haven, Fla., a Kiwanis Club member, a past member of the lllini Country Club in Springfield and had resided in Cypresswood Golf Club since 1988. Mr. Purnell is survived by his wife of 66 years Elizabeth; his two sons, Roger of Durham, N.C., and Douglas of Dundee, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
