Ernest W. Allen

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Ernest W. Allen, 88, died at 5:08 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Vonderleith Living Center in Mt. Pulaski, Ill.

He was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Springfield, to James Henry and Sarah Wheeler Allen. He married Melva Eileen Mackiney on June 27, 1948; she preceded him in death on July 25, 2013.

Also preceding him in death were his daughter, Bonnie Allen, and four brothers: Ancel, Homer, Irvin and Raymond.

Mr. Allen was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran during WW II in the Battle of Tarawa. He was a retired Letter Carrier of the U.S. Postal Service. He was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Mr. Allen was a life member of DAV, Eagles Club and a lifelong Cubs Fan.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Allen (Allen Diehm) and JoAnn McCauley (William D. Sweeton, Jr.), both of Springfield; two sons, Ernest R. (Barbara) Allen of Mexico, Mo., and John Joe (Diane) Allen of Norfolk, Va.; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, William (JoAnn) Mackiney of Springfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation: 10 a.m.-noon, Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Staab Funeral Home.

Funeral Service: Noon, Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Staab Funeral Home with John Joe Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Inter-Veterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors. There will be a reception immediately following the committal service at the Eagles Club, 2700 E. Ash St., Springfield, IL.

Memorials may be given to Safe Haven Hospice, or the Sangamon County Inter-Veterans Burial Detail.
