Gene L. Elliott
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Gene L. Elliott, 85, formerly Farmer City, Ill., passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, in his Springfield home surrounded by his wife and children. He was born Dec. 11, 1928, in Princeton, Ill. He wed his bride of 61 years, Mary Catherine Tierney on July 19, 1952, in Elkhart, Ill. He was the father of six children, Gail, Linda, Gene, Kathy, Angie, and Steve. He was the grandfather of 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Elliott graduated with his Masters degree from the University of Illinois. He taught as the Vocational Ag teacher and FFA Advisor for 37 years in both Middletown and Farmer City. During his life he was very involved in both his community and church. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish, Knights of Columbus, Exchange Club, Farmer City Fair Board, and the Woodlawn Country Club.
His favorite pastimes were gardening and landscaping, fishing, golfing, working and his family. He will best be remembered for his love of teaching which was considered "old school fair style", his quick wit-"Geneisms", his sense of humor, and being a true family man.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 612 N. Plum St., Farmer City, Ill., with Fr. James Henning, O.F.M., Conv officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Farmer City, Ill. Visitation will be from 5–8 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2014, at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, 106 N. Main St., Farmer City, Ill. A Rosary service will be at 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2014, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to either the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or research and development for Parkinson's disease.
