SPRINGFIELD - George Johnson, 95, of Springfield, passed away at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Ill.
He was born to the late George and Mildred Johnson on Dec. 26, 1917, in Chicago, Ill. His sister, Marion O'Hara, preceded him in death.
George graduated from Tilden Technical High School and attended college classes at Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill., before entering the U.S. Army in 1941. He was involved in combat operations in both North Africa and Europe, where he received several medals and ribbons. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Upon returning from the war, he met and married Ella Mae Myers. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service from where he retired in 1982. In 1986, after residing in Sauk Village, Ill., for almost 30 years, he and Mae moved to Bella Vista, Ark. In 2007, they moved to Springfield.
George was a member of Parkway Christian Church in Springfield. He enjoyed golf and bowling into his mid-90's and was healthy and active almost his entire life. He loved to travel and he and Mae visited Europe, Hawaii, Canada, and many states during their retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Mae, of Springfield; his daughter, Cindy, of Springfield; his son, Craig (wife, Cynthia) of Vancouver, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Ceremony: 11:00 a.m., on Friday, September 27, 2013, at Parkway Christian Church, 2700 Lindbergh Blvd., Springfield. Interment will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
