Harriet Harlow Montgomery

NAPLES, FL – Mrs. Harriet Harlow Montgomery of Naples, FL, formerly of Raleigh, N.C., Pinehurst, N.C., and Springfield, IL, died Friday, March 15, 2013 at Naples, FL.

She was born August 25, 1920, in Toledo, Iowa to Dr. & Mrs. Harve Ellis Harlow. She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Paul W. Montgomery and two sons, Dr. Stephen P. Montgomery and Thomas M. Montgomery.

Mrs. Montgomery was a graduate of the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. In 1942, Harriet married Paul W. Montgomery, a bronze star recipient, who heroically served his country as a major in World War II. After the war the Montgomerys settled in Springfield, IL, where Dr. Montgomery practiced medicine at the Springfield Clinic for 48 years. They moved to Pinehurst, N.C. on his retirement. In 2005, Mrs. Montgomery moved to Raleigh, N.C. residing at Magnolia Glen Senior Living Community. In 2011, Mrs. Montgomery moved to Naples, FL.

Mrs. Montgomery had a life-long love of music, playing violin with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for 27 years. In addition to her music, Mrs. Montgomery was active in numerous organizations including the Women's Symphony Guild, Sangamon County Medical Auxiliary, PEO, Daughters of the American Revolution, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Illini Country Club, the Women's Golf Committee in Pinehurst, and as an alumna of Pi Beta Phi. She was elec-ted to, and served for, 7 years on the Springfield Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority.

Mrs. Montgomery, who personified graciousness, was a warm and loving mother, always saying how proud she was of her sons. She delighted in her grandchildren and cherished each great-grand-child.

Survivors: two sons, Dr. Mark H. (Susan) Montgomery of Naples, FL, and Philip G. (Lea Anne) Montgomery of Jacksonville, FL; daughter-in-law, Susan Montgomery of Raleigh, NC; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
