Helen L. Nichols

TALLULA - Helen L. Nichols, 96, of Tallula passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2013, at Sunny Acres Home. She was born on July 28, 1916, in Menard County, the daughter of Charles and Flora (Woodrum) Masten. Helen married Thomas W. Nichols in Tallula on June 7, 1942. He preceded her in death on September 1, 2010.

Helen is survived by her sons, Richard Wayne (Mary) Nichols of Springfield and Terry Alan (Debbie) Nichols of Tallula; 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her daughter, Marilyn Showstead; 3 sisters; 1 brother and grandson, Scott Nichols.

Mrs. Nichols was a member of the Rock Creek Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Menard County Historical Society, Menard County Garden Club, IEA, NEA, AAUW and Delta Kappa Gamma. Helen began her teaching career at the age of 16 at Munger School, a one room schoolhouse in rural Menard County and continued teaching for the next 70 years. She attended the University of Illinois and received her Master of Education from Illinois State University.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Rock Creek Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Daniel officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in the Rock Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Liver for Life c/o Mike Nichols or a .

The Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg assisted the Nichols family with arrangements.
