Herbert Alfred Ericksen
SPRINGFIELD - Herbert Alfred Ericksen, 87, of Springfield passed away on November 3, 2012, at Regency Nursing Home. He was born October 1, 1925, in Chicago, IL, the son of Alfred and Anna Maria (Johanson) Ericksen. He married Ruth Sjoberg on November 27, 1946; she preceded him in death in 1991.
Herb is survived by three daughters, Dawn (Gary) Staley of Chatham, Jill Turley and Stacey (Jim) Klein, both of Springfield; one son, Craig (Lucie) Ericksen of Berkeley, CA; 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Herb joined the Army Air Corp after graduating from Schurz High School, Chicago, and trained at the end of World War II. He remained in the US Air Force Reserves and served as a pilot in the Korean War with the 437th Troop Carrier Wing.
After graduating from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in Engineering, Herb worked at Illinois Bell for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He and his family moved many times living in Chicago, Waukegan, Skokie, Decatur, Springfield (3 times), Joliet, New Jersey, and Galena. He was a member of the Ansar Shrine, Springfield, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Springfield, and a member of the Abe Lincoln High Twelve Club.
Herb was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Springfield, and was also active in the AT&T Pioneers, Sons of Norway, Military History Education Group and Springfield Civil War Roundtable. He also volunteered with the National Ski Patrol. Herb enjoyed skiing, traveling, playing poker, and watching his grandchildren play sports.
His cremated remains will be interred at Elm Lawn Memorial Park in Elmhurst, IL, following a family memorial service at a later date. Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
