SPRINGFIELD - James Hall Beaumont, 69, of Springfield, died Monday, April 29, 2013, at his home.
Jim was born September 24, 1943, in Decatur, IL, the son of James Harrold and Margaret Elizabeth (Hall) Beaumont. He married Mary Mitchell on August 21, 1965, in Raleigh, NC.
Jim was a graduate of MacArthur High School in Decatur. He received an A.B. with concentration in English Literature from Colgate University in New York, his M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University in New York, and his Masters of Public Administration from Sangamon State University (now University of Illinois Springfield). While at Colgate University, he was president of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and Editor of the student newspaper.
Jim began his career as a reporter for the Des Moines Register and then became a stockbroker and registered principal with Tabor Securities Co. in Decatur. He spent the remaining 30 years of his career with The Illinois Chamber of Commerce where he first covered the State House and later served as the Executive Director of the Illinois Chamber Political Action Committee. Upon retirement in 2002, Jim was Vice President in charge of the Capital City Office and Executive Vice President of the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. In 1994 he received the Distinguished Illinois Chamber of Commerce Executive Award.
Jim's public service included being a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Assistive Technology Project, a member of the House Commission on Persons with Disabilities, Chairman of the State Rehabilitation Services Advisory Council, and Chairman of the Springfield Disabilities Commission. Most recently he was on the board of the Sangamon County Historical Society and served two consecutive terms as chairman of the UIS Campus Alumni Advisory Board.
Jim was an Eagle Scout and a former board member of the Abraham Lincoln Boy Scout Council. He was also a past president of Springfield and Decatur Unitarian Fellowships. He enjoyed reading, traveling, music, and was an avid New York Yankees fan.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Beaumont of Springfield; two sons, James Mitchell Beaumont (wife, Wendy) of Ladera Ranch, California, and Matthew Hall Beaumont (wife, Jessica) of Bad Aibling, Germany; five grandchildren: James Tyler, Allison Elizabeth and Cassandra Claire of Ladera Ranch, and Helen Noelle and Emma Maeve of Bad Aibling; a brother, William Harrold Beaumont of Terrell, Texas; sister-in-law, Barbara Mitchell Mauk of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a niece, nephew, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will be hosting a Memorial Service officiated by Rev. Martin Woulfe at 11 a.m., Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 745 Woodside Road, Springfield with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Springfield Public Lincoln Library Foundation or the James Beaumont Public Affairs Reporting Scholarship at the University of Illinois at Springfield.
Cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.
