James M. Winning

SPRINGFIELD - James Montgomery Winning, of Springfield, passed away on May 1, 2013. He was 91.

Winning was born October 9, 1921, in Oak Park, IL, the son of Montgomery Smith Winning and Rebecca Mason Winning. He received a BA degree from DePauw University in 1943. He married Mary Elizabeth Baker, of Dwight, IL, on July 8, 1944.

Winning served in the Navy in World War II, as a Lieutenant (jg) and Engineering Officer and Captain of an LCI 756 – a landing craft infantry ship that sailed from Willamette, OR in 1944. He served in the South Pacific in Guam and Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands, where he witnessed the recapture of Mindanao in the Philippines. He was also at Iwo Jima in February of '45 and witnessed the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi. After Hiroshima, he took his ship to Manami Dito and accepted the surrender of the Japanese warriors there.

After the war, Winning attended the University of Michigan, where he received a law degree in 1948. From 1948 to 1994, he worked as an attorney with Giffin, Winning, Lindner and Newkirk (now Giffin, Winning, Cohen & Bodewes, P.C.) and was admitted to practice in Illinois, the United States District Court, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He was also a member of the Sangamon County and Illinois Bar Associations.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Springfield from 1962–1979, as Parliamentarian and Member of the Council of Advice for the president of the House of Deputies from 1969-1976, and as a member of the Executive Council of the National Episcopal Church.

A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary; son, James Montgomery Winning Jr. (Helen Prytula Winning) of Denver CO; daughters, Barbara Winning Drummond (the late David Drummond) of Arlington Heights, IL and Rebecca Winning (John Gill) of Denver, CO; seven grandchildren: James Montgomery Winning III, Michael Winning, Jennifer Winning, James Drummond, Matthew Drummond, Shelli Gill Nolen and Melissa Gill Meeks; and five great-grandchildren: James Montgomery Winning IV, Archer Nolen, Matthew Meeks, Walker Meeks and Holland Meeks.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, at Christ Episcopal Church with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 611 Jackson Street, Springfield, IL and/or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 403 Traverse St., Elk Rapids, MI.
