James R. Johnson
SPRINGFIELD - James R. Johnson, 75, of Springfield, died at 9:13 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center.
James was born May 24, 1938, in Springfield, the son of Leonard Francis and Allene McClelland Johnson. He married Gertrude A. Kennedy on June 14, 1958, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springfield.
James was a graduate of the University of Illinois in Champaign and worked for the Department of Transportation and Department of Mines and Minerals. James was an owner and operator of a local consulting engineering firm and an analytical testing laboratory, where he was working when he passed. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church for over 50 years, was on the U.S. Transportation Research Board, and belonged to American Society of Landscape Architects. James was a dedicated supporter of his grandchildren and was an accomplished woodworker, photographer and an avid gardener.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Prather; two brothers, Thomas and John Johnson; and one son, James R. Johnson II.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Ann Johnson of Springfield; five sons, Patrick (wife, Pamela) Johnson, and Michael (wife, Lisa) Johnson, both of Rochester, Brian (wife, Suzi) Johnson of New Berlin, Craig (wife, Jennifer) Johnson of Springfield, and Stephen (wife, Julie) Johnson of Sherman; one daughter, Laurie (husband, Devin) Dudas of Springfield; twenty-two grandchildren, Kate, Michael P., Joseph, Thomas, Matthew, Bobby, B.J., James, Ashley, Craig II, Andrew, John, Alexander, Jacqueline, Stephen II, Charles, Mary, and Benjamin Johnson, Michael, David, Heather, and Timothy Dudas; one great-grandchild, Connor Johnson; three brothers, Robert (wife, Connie) Johnson, and Edward (wife, Ann) Johnson, both of Springfield, and David (wife, Debbie) Johnson of Taylorville; three sisters, Sally Prewitt and Patricia Duknoski, both of Springfield, and Rose Johnson of Curran; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2119 N. 20th St., Springfield. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
