John B. Tipton
LOCKPORT, IL - John B. Tipton, 91, passed away April 14, 2013, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center. He was born on Valentine's Day in 1922 to the late Howerton and Nettie (Whittler) in Girard, Ill. John will be fondly remembered as the balloon man, as he always brought smiles to people's faces when he would give you a balloon animal or bouquet. John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the battleship South Dakota where he was injured. He was past commander of the Lockport American Legion John Olson Post #18, past chaplain of the DAV #103, member of New Lenox VFW Harry E. Anderson Post #9545, Joliet-Matteson Masonic Lodge #175, Ansar Shrine of Springfield and 40-8 Club of Joliet. John loved to help others and during the last years, John raised money from donations for injured service members who are presently in veteran's homes. He worked hard to get a veteran's clinic and hospital in Joliet.
Preceded in death by his wife, Loraine (Parrott); a son, Matthew; and his parents.
Survived by his daughter, Patricia (Roger) McReynolds of Joliet; grandchildren, Roger McReynolds, Randy (Heidi Buzay) McReynolds both of Joliet, Rebecca (Joe) Mahon of Illinois City, and Rachel (Jason) Ventura of Bremerton, Wash.; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Lilith, Evelyn and Riley; and a brother, Henry (Lois Weddle) Tipton of Girard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the DAV #103, 1717 Clement, Crest Hill, IL 60403 for Canteen books would be appreciated. Per John's wishes, cremation rites were accorded.
John's remains will be inurned at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood at 11:30 a.m., Monday, April 22, 2013. John's family will greet relatives and friends for a Memorial Gathering following inurnment.
