John J. Dougherty
PAWNEE, IL – John Jay Dougherty, Sr., 74, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Taylorville, Ill.
John was born May 4, 1939, in Springfield, Ill., the son of Rezin J. and Rosemary Thoemmes Dougherty. He married Liela V. Neeman on May 2, 1959, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Menlo Park, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James L. in 2004, a grandson, Robbie West in 2011 and a brother, Tom in 1988.
John was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Springfield. He graduated from Springfield High School in1956. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving aboard the USS Hancock. John was employed by the United States Postal Service as a clerk, retiring in 1994 after 30 years of service. John had also worked for Capitol Tours.
He enjoyed playing poker, camping and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. John enjoyed time with his grandkids.
John is survived by his wife, Liela, of Pawnee; two sons, John J. (companion, Penny Chesher) Dougherty, Jr., and Jerry Dougherty, both of Pawnee, Ill.; one daughter, Diana (husband, Jim) Love, of Pinson, Ala.; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two nephews and cousins.
John's family will meet friends from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at the Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee. A visitation also will be held Thursday, April 17, at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 2477 W. Washington St. in Springfield. Rev. Greg Busboom will officiate. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield with military honors.
