John Paul Malay
SPRINGFIELD - John Paul Malay, 77, of Springfield, died at 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at St. John's Hospital.
John was born September 2, 1936, in Dixon, the son of Paul Joseph and Mary Gorman Malay.
John proudly served our country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He worked in Indonesia for 25 years in the mining industry. A generous man, John was a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed doing charity work, especially for the food pantry, as well as working with Fr. Andy Phiri for a shipment of medical supplies to Zambia. He also supported Fr. Charlie in Indonesia for many years. John was a member of St. Cabrini and St. Agnes Churches and was most proud of being able to provide his children with higher educations.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Rosemary Robinson.
He is survived by four children, Pablo Malay of Singapore, Laura Melati Malay of Shokan, N.Y., Michael Malay of Bristol, England, and Kathleen Wulansari Malay of New York, N.Y.; one brother, James (wife, Elaine) Malay of Bloomington; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend and caregiver, Stephanie Brummett of Springfield.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, November 18, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 5 p.m.
Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church, 1020 N. Milton Ave., Springfield, with Rev. Richard Chiola celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Department of Defense.
