Raymond Walter Hickman, Jr.
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Raymond Walter Hickman, Jr., 88, died at 7:40 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at his home.
He was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Springfield to Raymond Walter and Grace Marie Bryant Hickman, Sr. He married Bette J. Moore in 1947 and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Ronald J. Hickman of Sherman, Raymond Walter (Mona) Hickman III of Springfield and Lyle F. (Tracy) Hickman of Riverton; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria (Jim) Marshall and Karen (John) Frederick, both of Topeka, Ill.; one brother, Richard Hickman of Athens, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His parents and one brother, Donald Hickman, preceded him in death.
Walter was a member of St. Aloysius Church. Mr. Hickman was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII aboard the USS LSM 219. He received several commendations including the Philippine Liberation Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon (1 Star), American Area Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal (2 Stars). He was a founding member of the VFW Post 10302.
He was a resident of Springfield all of his life. He retired from Fiat Allis after 32 years.
Graveside Service: 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Deacon Ben Hoefler officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the U.S. Navy.
