Richard Sterling Brooks

CHATHAM- Richard Sterling Brooks, 74, of Chatham, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013 at St. John's Hospital after an automobile accident in Springfield. He was born December 30, 1938, in Jerseyville, IL to the late Clarence and Lois Hefner Brooks. Richard married Linda Duncan October 2, 1960, and they moved to Chatham in 1976. He entered the US Army in 1961 and served during the Berlin Crisis. He was a member of the Chatham American Legion Post #759. Mr. Brooks worked for IDOT for 35 years, retiring in 1993, as Bureau Chief of Plans and Contracts. He entered corporate sales for AON Insurance for several years. Dick was an avid Illini and St. Louis Cardinal fan.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Lisa (Doug) Simmons of Springfield; grandchildren, Ashley Merschman, Kaitlyn Merschman, Mitchell Gaffney, Hunter Brooks, Gavin Simmons, Carter Simmons; step grandchildren, Devon (Kelsey) Simmons, Derek Simmons, Isaac Lewis; sister, Carol Geil of Hartford, IL, Judy (Frank) Fulkerson of Macomb, IL; brother, Robert (Wilma) Brooks of Jerseyville, IL; in-laws, Janet Callahan of Godfrey, William (Beth) Duncan, Joan Duncan, Cheryl (Jerry) Bauersachs, Dee (Don) Walsh all of Grafton, Trudy Duncan of Jerseyville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Brooks son, Michael preceded him in death in 2003.

Visitation: His family will greet friends from 4-7pm, Thursday, March 28 at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham.

Visitation and Funeral Ceremony from 9am until the time of services at 10am, Friday, March 29, at Chatham Baptist Church, 1500 East Walnut, Chatham. Burial will follow at Chatham Memorial Cemetery with the Interveterans' Burial Detail of Sangamon County conducting military honors.

Memorial Contribution may be made to the Brooks Grandchildren Family Fund. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.
