SPRINGFIELD, IL - Rita McGuire, 92, resident of St. Joseph's Home in Springfield, passed away there on Dec. 31, 2013.
Mary Rita Kane McGuire, daughter of John and Mary Eileen Kane was born June 5, 1921, in Livingston County. She attended rural school and graduated from Chatsworth High School in 1938.
Rita married Joseph McGuire in Chatsworth in 1943; he preceded her in death in 2002.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.
Rita attended Illinois State Normal University (now ISU) from 1938-1940 and from 1948-1950, where she received her degree in Special Education. She taught speech correction in DeWitt County schools from 1950-1955.
She earned her Master's degree from the University of Illinois in Champaign in 1964 and taught elementary school from 1955-1980 at Westview School in Champaign.
Rita was a member of the Illinois and Champaign County Retired Teachers Associations, U of I Alumni Association, St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Champaign, Catholic Daughters of America and the Provena Covenant Hospital Auxiliary. She was an active member and a past-president of the Illinois Women's Club of Champaign-Urbana.
She had served as a hospital volunteer and as an election judge. Rita was also active in several bridge clubs.
Her family includes her daughter, Mary Kathleen Dunn (husband, Richard); her granddaughter, Julienne Ratz (husband, Joshua); and great-grandchildren, Daniel Patrick Guttas, Catherine Rose Ratz, and Elizabeth Lillian Ratz, all of Springfield; her brother, Don Kane (wife, Gayle) of Fort Myers, Fla.; and a sister, Joan McLaughlin (husband, Neil) of Mundelein.
Funeral Mass: 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at St. Joseph's Home, 3306 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL, with Rev. Philip Kraft, celebrant.
Graveside Committal and Entombment will follow at 2 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum in Champaign.
