SPRINGFIELD- Robert O'Neil Hedges, 90, died early Sunday morning on February 10, 2013 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield following a brief illness. Bob was born in Clark County, IL on August 21, 1922 and spent most of his life in Springfield.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Mary Kay Hedges, his father Ragan L. Hedges, his mother Ina Cunningham Goldberg, and his stepfather Morris Goldberg.

He is survived by his son, Michael O. (wife, Paula) Hedges of Gainesville, FL; daughter, Deborah Sue "Susie" (husband, Tom) Hedges Culver of Boone, NC; grandsons, Jason Hedges of Gainesville, FL, Tommy and David Culver, both of Boone, NC; and granddaughter, Christina Hedges Stokes of Chicago. He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Robbie (husband, Bob) Kuchar of Marietta, GA, Sally (husband, Larry) Quinn of Springfield, Terri (husband, William) Smith of Locust Grove, VA; and step-grandchildren, Emily Kuchar of Marietta, GA, Amy (husband, Barry) Friedman, Jennifer Farrell, Molly (husband, Jeff) Fleischli, and Tony Quinn, all of Springfield. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

Bob graduated from the University of Illinois earning a BA in Liberal Arts and Indiana University School of Law earning his J.D. He was admitted to the BAR in Illinois and Indiana, as well as Supreme Court of the United States of America. Bob retired from West Publishing Company in 1985 after 26 years of service. He became close friends with many judges and lawyers throughout Central and Southern Illinois.

Lt. Hedges served in the US Navy during WWII Pacific Theater as an officer assigned to US LST 808. He observed the U.S. flag being raised on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. His ship was later hit and sunk by Japanese Kamikaze planes off the island of Ie Shima. He attended the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2011.

Bob enjoyed music, dancing, Cardinals baseball, Indiana Hoosiers basketball, and family activities. He maintained a keen sense of wit and humor throughout his life. More than anything, he loved being around friends and family. Many knew him as "Grandad". He was a loyal friend to all and was an ageless original who lived life to the fullest.

Bob was a lifetime member of NRA, American Legion Post 90, VFW Post 755, Grand Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Illinois, Lodge 133, IL LST Association, 808 LST Association, Pi Gamma Mu National Social Science Honor, Sigma Delta Kappa Law Fraternity, and Republican National Committee.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to everyone at St. John's Hospital who made his last days a little easier.
