Russell Lee Denton
PETERSBURG, IL - Russell Lee Denton, 87, of Petersburg, died on March 12, 2014 at Sunny Acres Home after a long illness. He was born July 27, 1926, the son of Frederick Lee and Mary Emma (McKinny) Denton in Petersburg, IL. He married Emma Lou Arnold July 14, 1956, at Central Presbyterian Church.
Russell is survived by his wife Emma Lou Denton, of Petersburg; a son, Gregg Lee Denton of Bellevue, WA; two grandchildren, Andrew and Meagan Denton, a great-grandchild, Lyndsey Denton; and a daughter Lori A. Denton (partner, Lori Stayton) of Evergreen, CO. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by nine brothers, Clarence, Walter, Charles Roy, Fred, John, Carl, Harry, Joe and Richard Denton; and three sisters, Ellma Kinny, Mary Vice and Rosa Bentley.
Russell graduated from Petersburg Harris High School in 1944 and joined the United States Navy serving his country till 1946. After the service, he spent time in Florida guiding fishing trips. He was an avid fisherman himself and also enjoyed hunting ducks, geese, pheasants, and deer. Russ enjoyed traveling and vacations in the West. He owned and operated Denton Construction Company with his brother Fred, doing renovations and new building construction. Russell was active with the boy scouts with his son and with Riverside BMX club with his daughter. In his spare time, he and Emma Lou volunteered as ushers at Sangamon Auditorium in Springfield. Russ was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Petersburg.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 11:30 am at Central Presbyterian Church in Petersburg with Pastor Leah Elrod officiating. The family will greet friends at a visitation on Monday, March 17 from 5 to 7 pm, also at Central Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Presbyterian Church.
