Phalen Kirk

SPRINGFIELD - Saundra Phalen Kirk 68, of Springfield, formerly of Jacksonville, passed away suddenly after a short but courageous battle with stomach cancer, Sunday, January 6, 2013 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

She was born in Jacksonville, IL January 15, 1944 the daughter of Charles "Bud" and Mildred "Millie" DeFrates Phalen. Her father preceded her in death, as well as an infant son.

Saundra married James H. "Jim" Kirk and he survives. She is also survived by her daughter, Druanne (husband David) Allen, 2 granddaughters; Tess and Ruby, all of Rochester, her mother, Mildred "Millie" Phalen-Doyle of Springfield, her brother, Chuck (wife Chris) Phalen of Danville, IL, her sister, Peggy Jo Baker, a niece, Dana "Chris" Baker both of Springfield, and her nephew Douglas Baker of Virden, IL.

Saundra retired from the State of Illinois after many years of service, with the Department of Children and Family Services, the Department of Professional Regulation, and lastly with the Department of Corrections. She was also an independent Nail Technician and a Mary Kay Cosmetic Representative.

She was a member of the Elks Lodge, a strong supporter of the Animal Protective League, a member of the Young Republicans, served as the Republican Precinct Committee Women, and was a member of the Central Illinois Corvettes. She enjoyed gaming, knitting, and attending car shows. She loved animals, especially her 3 dogs. She was active with her 1961 graduating class of Jacksonville High School Reunion Committee.

Following her wishes, Cremation Rites will be accorded by Bisch Crematory. Private services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those that wish may direct memorial contributions to the Animal Protective League 1001 Taintor Rd. Springfield, IL 62702.
