Vernon C. "Babe" Brewer

SPRINGFIELD - Vernon C. "Babe" Brewer, 87, of Springfield, died at 3:30 a.m. on April 27, 2013, at Villa Healthcare East.

Babe was born February 11, 1926, in Malden, MO, son of James Calvin and Clara Chester Wimberly Brewer. He married Charlotte May McDonald on June 10, 1950, in Springfield; she preceded him in death.

Babe proudly served our country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed by Pillsbury Mill until his retirement in 1993 after 43 years of service. He was previously a member of the American Legion and enjoyed racing stock cars in the early 1950's. Babe was also an avid Chicago Cubs and University of Illinois fan.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Van and Jim Brewer; and sister, Inez Williamson.

He is survived by his three children: Mike (wife, Linda) Brewer of Pleasant Plains, John (wife, Cynthia) Brewer of Jacksonville, and Theresa Byers of Pleasant Plains; five grandchildren: Clayton, Jacob, and Daniel Byers, Tiffany Roe, and Christopher Brewer; two sisters, Sally Powell and Ruth Ann Brown both of FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.

Memorial Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors.
