FRIES, Daniel James 77, of St. Petersburg passed away Thursday, June 26, 2014. He was born on Feb. 11, 1937 to Franklin and Elva Fries, the youngest of five children in Cumberland, MD. He moved to St. Petersburg with his family in his teens, graduating from St. Petersburg High in 1955 and then later St. Petersburg College. After completing an enlistment in the Navy, he returned to St. Petersburg to join the fire department. He worked his way up to Lieutenant in the St. Petersburg Fire Department. After medically retiring from St. Petersburg he worked for the Largo Fire department for over 20 years; first as fire marshall then as the fire chief in Largo, until his retirement. He stayed active in fire associations for many years and was well respected for his knowledge and leadership, obtaining multiple awards. In his retirement he liked golf, travelling to his favorite spots in Deep Creek, MD and Nantucket, MA, watching sports, especially football, baseball and hockey, reading, a love of history, telling old stories and most recently an avid interest in technology. He is survived by his wife, Carol Fries; his children, Margaret Zakett (James Frisinger, fiancé) of Ft Myers, and Franklin (Jill) Fries of Springfield, VA, along with his grandchildren, Alexandra and Danielle Zakett and Franklin and Emma Fries, as well as many nieces and nephews. At his request, there will be no service but a celebration of Dan's life will take place July 12, location to be determined.
