SMITH, David Anderson "Andy" left this earth and began his spiritual journey June 29, 2014, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Andy was born Dec. 27, 1952, to the late William J. "Red" Smith and Rosemary J. Smith-Roe. He graduated with a BS in geology from Florida State University, and a MS in geology from the University of South Florida. Andy's love of the environment led him to a successful career as a geologist. A registered professional geologist in Florida since 1989, he was a member of the Association of Groundwater Scientists and Engineers, participated in the water wars and as an expert witness. He worked as a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Sources Division, Tampa, Southwest Florida Management District, Brooksville, was an associate research scientist with the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas, Austin, a supervisor with the Southwest Florida Water Management, Resource Evaluation Section, Brooksville, a faculty member at Saint Leo University, and operated his own hydro-geologist consulting firm. Before his retirement this January, he was a professional geologist with Florida Geological Survey, Tallahassee. Kindness was Andy's religion, and he was known for his devotion to his wife and children. An avid long-distance cyclist, he rode his bike 30 miles daily on his lunch break. He completed the Rag Bri long-distance road race five times. Andy is survived by his wife, Cheryl Stimac; sons, Benjamin (Amanda) and Daniel (Chelsea) Smith; and his stepson, Ian (Jennifer) Humble; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill (Deems), Tom (Edith), Sam (Trish), and Jeff (Mary); numerous nieces and nephews; stepfather, Burton Roe; and stepsister, Virginia Roe; mother and father-in-law, Jim (Annette) Burk. A memorial service will be held at the Andrews Memorial Chapel in Dunedin, on July 19, 4:30 pm.
