SMITH, Dr. David Joe resident of Regency Oaks, Sylvan Healthcare in Clearwater, formerly of Palm Harbor, died Aug. 31, 2013, after a short illness. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy; and is survived by children, Sally Robbins, Susan Phillips, David Park Smith; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. "Dr. Joe" was born on Sept. 8, 1917 in Fort Branch, IN. He was a graduate of Culver Military Academy and Indiana University School of Medicine, and was decorated for his service with the 314th Medical Battalion, 89th Infantry Div. in Europe, WWII. He practiced medicine in Indianapolis and pioneered specialization in occupational health and industrial medicine, and retired as Medical Director of U.S.Steel. Dot and Joe retired to Palm Harbor, where he was active in community affairs including service on the Education Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, and was recognized as Palm Harbor Citizen of the Year. They later moved to Regency Oaks where they enjoyed many activities and good friends. The family extends gratitude to the wonderful staff at Sylvan Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing, and to Suncoast Hospice.
