WAX, Elaine Ross 92, of St. Petersburg, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2014 of the effects of Alzheimer's disease, surrounded by family. Elaine was born in Akron, OH, to Sam and Martha Leeper. After the death of Sam when she was seven, Elaine and her sister Lois were later adopted by Mark Ross, when he and Martha married. This union brought a younger sister, Hermina, into Elaine's life. In 1930, the family moved to Ann Arbor, MI, where she graduated from high school at 16 and entered the University of Michigan. There, Elaine met Kenneth Wax, of Chicago. They were married in June 1941, and Kenny was drafted soon after. He served as a medical photographer at several army bases stateside, and with luck and ingenuity, Elaine was able to follow him from base to base until Barry was born in 1945 in Ann Arbor. They lived in Westfield, MA, where Cheri was born, then back to Ann Arbor before moving to St. Petersburg in 1954, where Wendy was born. Elaine was a long-time member of Congregation B'nai Israel, where she wrote and produced several plays, and later of Temple Beth El, where she worked on the annual art show and many other projects. She was an active volunteer at Menorah Manor, where she helped organize the gift shop, and was a volunteer docent at the Florida Holocaust Museum. Elaine was a successful realtor, an avid golf and tennis player, loved to play mah-jongg, and loved to dance. She was a talented cook, hostess and event organizer, and unofficial 'welcome wagon' for newcomers to the Jewish community. She was a loving, supportive and proud grandmother and great-grandmother. Elaine's warm personality, generous spirit and great sense of humor will be remembered by everyone who knew and loved her. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 1982. She is survived by her children, Barry Wax, Cheri Madsen (Mike) and Wendy Wax Adler (John); seven grandchildren, Melissa Wax Roller (DJ), Jon Wax (Brenda), Ashley Wax Rai (Alvin), Jeffrey Madsen (Julianna), Gregory Madsen (Jenny), Kevin Adler and Drew Adler; nine great-grandchildren, Jameson, Kennedy, Audrey, Nathan, Carter, Avery, Kenneth Miller, Henry Walker and Greer; and her sisters, Lois Sidenberg (Lenny) and Hermina Spero. Funeral services will be 11 am, Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at David C. Gross Funeral Home in St. Petersburg. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elaine's memory to Suncoast Hospice or Menorah Manor Foundation. Online guestbook at davidcgross.com David C.
