Harvey Thomas "Tom" ASHLEY Jr.


ASHLEY, Harvey Thomas Jr. "Tom" 89, of Tampa, a devout Christian, passed peacefully on July 10, 2013, at the Melech Hospice House after a brief battle with cancer. Tom was born on May 10, 1924 in Wilmington, NC. The family moved to Tampa in 1929. During the Depression, the only son of Sally Ashley, became the man of the house to his three sisters, Shirley (Weidner), deceased, Jane (Reusch), deceased, and Carolyn (Antonini). Tom graduated from Hillsborough High in June 1941 and joined the Navy in Dec. 1942, serving in the South Pacific, Guam and Saipan, in Aviation Ordinance. After WWII, he earned a BSBA degree from the Univ. of Florida in June 1949, becoming a lifelong Gator fan. After several years in management and operations with Goodyear Service Stores, in 1958, he was employed by Pan American Airways as Admin. Supt. on various NASA missile tracking stations from the Bahamas to South Africa. After 20 years 'down range', this quiet bachelor retired to his Tampa home in 1978. A member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church since 1991, he was ordained an Elder and a Deacon. In addition to his sister Carolyn, Tom is a beloved role model to numerous nieces and nephews, their families and his church friends. Visitation will be at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4207 East Lake Ave, Tampa, beginning at 10:30 am, on Saturday, July 13th, with funeral services to follow at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, Tom requests donations be made to Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 709 W. Linebaugh Ave.
