MITCHELL, Joy Hays 88, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 at her home in Treasure Island. She was born June 13, 1924 in Louisville, KY, the daughter of Harvey and Anna Hays. Joy graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in psychology in 1946 and married Thomas B. Mitchell in 1947. Together they pursued graduate studies in Italy and France and traveled the continent by bicycle. Their son Robin T. Mitchell was born in Paris in 1949. Upon returning to the U.S., Joy earned her doctorate in psychology from Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, TN. Joy taught in Nashville and Oak Ridge, TN as well as in Korea and Japan. Returning to the U.S. in 1962, the Mitchells moved to Temple Terrace. Joy joined the teaching staff at St. Petersburg Junior College and served as a department chair and division director before retiring in 1990. The Mitchells moved to Treasure Island in 1973 and continued their world travels. In addition to travel, antiques and reading, women's rights and politics were passions for Joy. By her own description, she was a yellow-dog Democrat. She was predeceased by her husband, Tom in 1990 and son, Robin in 2011. Joy is survived by her granddaughter, Andria Overstreet, her husband, Scott, their son, Lucas and daughter-in-law, Sharon Bond, as well family and friends across the globe. As Joy requested, no service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to PlannedParenthood.org, AmericanRedCross.org, or ACLU.org.
