Obituary

NIEMI, Kenneth Arthur 84, of Valrico, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. He was born in Fitchburg, MA, to the late Urho and Nellie Niemi. He was an avid fan of Boston sports teams and Fitchburg High foo-tball. Ken played semi-pro foo-tball for the Fitchburg Tigers; he was a 1947 graduate of Fitchburg High School. Ken was a disabled veteran and proudly served his country as a member of the 3rd Ranger Company in Korea. When he was wounded he received the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars, Combat Infantrymens Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea presidential Unit Citation Badge, Army of Occupation Medal with Japan clasp, United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree. A special tha-nks goes to Leo and Rose Biss-onnette & family for the many years of providing Ken a good home and care. He is survived by his brother, Edwin Niemi and wife Carolyn of Fitchburg, MA; as well as many his aunts and cousins. A memorial mass will be held at Nativity Catholic Church of Brandon on Thursday, June 19, at 10:30 am, with inurnment to follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ken's name to Disabled American Veterans, P.O Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
