WAHLEN, Leonard M., an icon in South Tampa for over fifty years left this life on April 9, 2013 to join all who passed before him. He leaves many that loved him and called him friend. He is survived by his daughter, Pat and husband Ed; granddaughter, Chris (Rob); grandson, Edward III (Jamee); grandson, Jerry; granddaughter, Janice (Dave); granddaughter, Maxine; great grandchildren, Megan, Marty, Meredith, Chad, Josh, Alicia and Casey; great- great grandchildren, Joey and Dakota. He also leaves his sisters, Genevieze, Teresa, and Mary. Len was born on August 10, 1922 in Germantown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended LaSalle High School and College where he lettered in football, swimming, and track. In 1936, he ran against Jesse Owens in the Penn Olympics. He went on to serve the country he loved in WWII (Pacific Theater) and then to Tampa as a Military Policeman where he later was discharged and decided to stay. He met the love of his life, Ethel, and together they shared fifty years of marriage until she passed in 1997. Later he married a close friend Mary and they were together for five years. He owned and operated MacDill Tire and Battery at Swann and MacDill Ave for 46 years and was very active in the Tampa community. He served in positions such as, President of Palma Ceia Lions Club, Chaplain of Hillsborough Lodge #25 for 42 years, President of the Ritual Team at Egypt Temple Shrine, President of Maxwell Klan of the Royal Order of Scotland. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Tampa, Eastern Star chapter 11, American Legion Post 139 and numerous other organizations.
