BOWER, Dr. Lewis Lattin age 88, passed away in Venice, FL on April 15, 2014. He was born in Corning, NY. He served honorably in the United States Navy, as a Pharmacist Mate 2, during World War II, in the Pacific and South America, and survived a torpedo attack that sank the ship he was on. He also assisted in evacuating the wounded from the Philippines. Upon his discharge, he married Betty Jane Rohde and enrolled in the University of Wisconsin, and earned his bachelors and masters degrees. He returned to New York State to partner with his father, Mason Bower, as a residential building contractor. He later become an Instructor and an Associate Professor at the NYS College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. He earned his PHD from the Maxwell School of Public Policy, at Syracuse University. He retired from Cornell University and moved to St. Petersburg, where he worked for Gulf Construction Co., as a field clerk. He also was active in rehabilitating condominiums at Winston Court, where he lived for 30 years. He had a lifelong love for boating, and bowling and played clarinet in the Navy and several dance bands. He was a long time member of the American Legion. He was predeceased by his first wife Betty Jane (Rohde) Bower, mother of his seven children; his son, Noel Robert Bower; brother James Mason Bower; and sister Helen Jane Bower. He is survived by his children, Betty Simon, Rebecca (Edward) Vallely, Susan Bower, Michael Bower, Christopher (Nancy) Bower, and Barbara (Barry) Siebe; nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 1 pm, at the Englewood Community Funeral Home with Private Crematory, 3070 South McCall Road, Englewood, FL.
