HOUK, Mim Anne 86, passed away June 2, 2013, in Dunedin. A Florida native, Mim was raised in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from Vanderbilt University. She married Wes Houk of Nashville in 1947 and returned to Florida in 1954 with her growing family. Other than one year spent in Florence, Italy with her family, she remained a Pinellas County resident for the next 59 years. She taught at Clearwater High School for two years before teaching for 22 years at the Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg College, where her classes included English and film studies. She retired in 1988 but remained active through travel in the U.S. and abroad, teaching classes at Elderhostel, contributing a column for the Seniority section of the Times, tutoring English as a second language, and giving presentations to book, movie and poetry groups. She read almost constantly and pressed her friends and students to read, too. Mim treasured her children and her abiding friendships with colleagues, students, neighbors, relatives and extended family. Mim was preceded in death by a son, Casey, in 1960 and her husband, Wes, in 2006. She is survived by her son, Louis, and his wife, Loretta; daughter, Claudia; son, Tim; grandson, Andrew, and his wife, Lisa; and great-granddaughters, Emma and Evie. In addition, she leaves countless former students.
