FOSTER, Raleigh Eugene, age 94, born in Columbia, South Carolina to Manuel Marco Foster and Theo Elizabeth Lawhon Foster on November 24, 1918, passed away suddenly at home January 2, 2013 in Avon Park, Florida. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Avon Park, Florida as a young person and again when he returned to live in Avon Park in 2001. He was drafted in the United States Army Air Corps and served during World War II. An early participant in the ground war against the Nazis, he was sent to North Africa about the time of Operation Torch. He was in combat support throughout the North African campaign, the invasion of Sicily and the Italian mainland. After graduation from the University of Florida, he worked as a bank examiner among other jobs. Prior to moving back to Avon Park in 2001, he resided for most of his adult life in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings. He is survived by a brother, David L. Foster of St. Petersburg, Florida and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home in Avon Park with Pastor Jon Beck officiating.
