MENTZER, Robert Evan died peacefully on June 1, 2014, at his home in Seminole, at the age of 101. Born on Oct. 8, 1912 in Reading, PA, he was the only child of the late Dr. Evan W. and Tacy Mentzer. After graduating from Reading High School in 1930, he went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, in 1934 where he was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He met Helen Aagaard during his senior year of high school, and they were married shortly after he graduated from Muhlenberg College and were married for 76 years until her death in 2011. A career in banking took Bob and his family to Grove City, Oil City, and Waynesburg, all in Pennsylvania, and Parkersburg, WV. During these years, he continued to study finance at the University of Wisconsin and Penn State University. In 1977, Mr. Mentzer retired as president of The Peoples Bank in Weirton, WV. A Rotarian for 60 years, Mr. Mentzer served as district governor in West Virginia, was president of three rotary clubs and a Paul Harris Fellow. During their 14 years in Weirton, Bob and Helen were loving host parents to six Rotary International exchange students. Bob and Helen moved to the Seminole area in 1978 and later to Lake Seminole Square. His service to his community never wavered as he served as vice president of the Condo Association, president of the Resident Advisory Council, chairman of the Holiday Gift Fund, and treasurer of the Lake Seminole Square Scholarship Fund. Mr. Mentzer was an avid reader, duplicate bridge player, and golfer, and enjoyed sharing a meal with friends. He loved marching band music, family vacations at the Jersey Shore, the trips he and Helen shared in Europe, Hawaii, South Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, and all the Rotary District Governors meetings throughout the United States. His passions were his Christian faith, his family, the stock market, and the "Perfect Manhattan!" His wonderful sense of humor was with him throughout his entire life. He remembered everyone's name and was quick to extend a greeting and smile to anyone who crossed his path. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, but they will rejoice knowing that he and Helen are together again in Paradise. Mr. Mentzer is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Mentzer Byham (William C.) of Pittsburgh, PA, Christine Mentzer Batten (David P.) of Baltimore, MD; four grandchildren, Tacy M Byham and Carter W. Byham both of Pittsburgh, Erika Batten Goldwater (John A.) of Marblehead, MA, Kurt D. Batten of Boulder, CO; and four great-grandchildren, Spencer Byham-Carson and Olivia, Mitchell, and Bennett Goldwater. A memorial service will be held on Sept. 6, 2014 at 2 pm, at Lake Seminole Square. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake Seminole Square Scholarship Fund, 8333 Seminole Boulevard, Seminole, FL 33772.
