BAIN, Roy Bailey Tuscaloosa, AL, passed away at the age of 77 on Dec. 20, 2013. Roy had a long and successful career in journalism that began in 1959 as a reporter for the daily Commercial Dispatch in Columbus, MS. He was a former employee of the St. Petersburg Times for nearly 20 years, before retiring in May of 1998. He served as publisher for three zoned additions of the Times, including the Pasco Times, Hernando Times, and the Citrus Times. Prior to joining the Times, Bain was founding editor of the South Magazine, a monthly 10-state business publication based in Tampa. He was presented with an award for best in-depth reporting in 1979 by the Florida Magazine Association, and his magazine won a General Excellence award from FMA that year. Earlier in his life, Bain was a reporter for newspapers in Tuscaloosa, Meridian, Laurel, and Columbus, MS. He was also managing editor of the Cleveland Daily Banner. As a reporter in Meridian, he was cited by the Associated Press and the United Press International for on-scene reporting during the tense Mississippi summer of 1964 in which three civil rights workers were killed and buried in a farm pond dam near Philadelphia. Bain was born on March 29, 1936 in Marshall County, AL, and raised in Carrollton, AL, where he attended public school and then Auburn University where he received a BA in journalism. Bain was also a US Army veteran, serving in the Berlin Wall crisis on 1960-62 as an intelligence analysis. Bain is survived by his spouse, Billie Jean Babb Bain, of Tuscaloosa; daughters, Laurie Lanham (Michael) of Zephyrhills, Bonne Czochara (Robert) of Anthen, AZ, Amy Meisman (Steve) of Zephyrhills, Kathy Hewitt (Dennis) of Dunanville, AL; sons, Rob Bain of Florida, and Tim Bain (Lilian) of Hallandale Beach; sister, Ann Dean (Charles) of Birmingham, Al; brothers, Bill Bain (Bev) of Ft. Walton Beach, Niel Bain (Flora) of Hollysprings, MS, Gordon Bain (Patricia) of Raymond, MS, Bryan Bain (Barbara) of Dothan, AL; seven grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bobby Bain. Services will be held on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel of Reform, AL. Visitation will be one hour prior and immediately following the service at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Auburn University Journalism Advisory Council or Calvary Baptist Church.
