McMULLEN, Thomas K. 88, passed away June 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Tom was born in Philadelphia & received his education there. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Reuben James. He migrated to Tampa in 1952 with his wife, Margaret to start his lifelong career as an agent in the commercial property/casualty insurance industry, retiring from Poe & Associates, Inc., after 31 years. Tom was an active member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church since its inception in 1959, where he coordinated the lectors for 35 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was recently honored with the Diocese of St. Petersburg, St. Jude the Apostle Award. His involvement in the community included leadership on the boards of St. Joseph Hospital Development, MacDonald Training Center, Tampa Jaycees, Tampa Catholic High School, and the Pilot Commission of Hillsborough County, where he served two appointments. He served as past president of the Tampa Sertoma Club and the Independent Insurance Agents of Greater Tampa. He led the insurance licensing program at the University of Tampa for 27 years. He was one of the first members of the Tampa ROMEO Club. His interests extended to state and local politics being active in several campaigns and notably known locally as "Black-Box" McMullen as campaign manager for Mayor Nick Nuccio. Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Margaret Casee; five children, Dr. Bryan (Lynn), Karen Fehr (Dr. Ralph), Michael (Mickey), Robert T. and Peggy Gonzalez (Bryan); and grandchildren, Clayton & Will Hobart, Jordan, Sydney, Gabriel & Jameson McMullen. He is also survived by his sister, Theresa Brown of New Jersey. Visitation will take place 5-7 pm, Monday, June 24th, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 5225 N. Himes Ave. A mass will immediately follow. A private burial will take place Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
