NEWBY, Tyffani Laurken (SFC) age 36, passed away on Feb. 9, 2013, while on Active Duty at Ft. Bragg, NC. She was born in St. Petersburg, and graduated from Forest High School in Ocala. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1995, as a Combat Documentaion Specialist (25V). She attended Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, SC, and Advanced Individual Training at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola. During her Army career, SFC Newby deployed in support of operations in Bosnia in 1997, and Kosovo in 1999. She deployed twice to combat operations during the Global War on Terror. She served a six month deployment to Iraq in 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and seven months in Afghanistan in 2007, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Her military education includes: Basic Airborne Course, Jumpmaster Course, U.S. Army Air Assault School, U.S. Army Recruiting and Retention School, Drill Sergeant School, U.S. Army Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape level C Course. SFC Newby's awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster (Posthumously Awarded), the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal with a Silver Clasp with one loop, the National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Kosovo Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the Afghan Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism. Service Medal, the Korean Defence Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with a Numeral 3 Device, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon with a Numeral 3 Device, the United Nations Medal, the NATO Medal, the Army Superior Unite Award, the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, the U.S. Army Gold Recruiter Badge with two Sapphire Achievement Stars, the Combat Action Badge, the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge. She is survived by her mother, Laurette Black of St. Petersburg; her husband, Jefferson Newby, of North Carolina; daughters, Vyctoria Williams, of Mississippi, and Shelbi, North Carolina; son, Ethan Newby, of North Carolina; brother, Ken Urbano, of Virginia; grandmother, Bettye Black (Jay Black), of St. Petersburg; aunts, Sharon Born, of Safety Harbor, Catherine Black of St. Petersburg; and her "Aunt Sharon and Uncle Bill" Stone, of St. Petersburg. Interment was held in Arlington National Cemetery on Feb. 27, 2013. Memorial Service will be held at a later date in St. Petersburg.
