Barney Dill Obituary
Dill, Barney 1966 - 2014 Surrounded by his wife and family, Dudley Barnes (Barney) Dill, age 47, died peacefully on Thursday evening, January 23, in Vail, Colorado, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born and raised in St. Louis, Barney graduated from St. Louis Country Day School ('85) (now MICDS), and Vanderbilt University ('89). He started his career with Anheuser-Busch, supporting their mountain distributors from their brewery in Ft. Collins, Colorado. With a love for Colorado mountain skiing developed during earlier family trips, a first job in the mountains facilitating weekend trips to the slopes in winter, and trout fishing the mountain streams in summer was hard to beat. This love of the mountains guided many of his later important career and life decisions. After returning to St. Louis for his MBA ('94) at Washington University, Barney joined Coors Brewing back in Colorado, but eventually shifted from the beer industry into several Denver software technology start-ups. Denver also led Barney to the love of his life, Carrie, a mountain-top weekend wedding in Vail, and eventually a move from Denver to Vail, where Barney traded his brewing and software backgrounds for real estate, a field where his interpersonal skills and business acumen led to considerable success. When not working or spending time with family, Barney was often found knee deep in the Eagle River putting the right fly in just the right spot, and was rarely found out and about without at least one of his beloved four-legged companions. Though Barney loved his life in the mountains, he always kept one foot in St. Louis with his family and close friends, often luring them to Vail to share these mountain experiences he so enjoyed. Barney lived the years he was given to the fullest, and was an amazingly approachable person. He believed happiness comes from making new friends, not enemies, and seemed to gain new energy with each new friend he so easily and often embraced. We will miss Barney's welcoming smile, his jokes and quick wit, his laughter, his humility, and faith, but our fond memories of this good friend will continue always. Barney was preceded in death by his mother, Louise (Titchie) Dill and uncle (Reese Dill), and is survived by his loving wife, Carrie Mills Dill, and their beloved daughter, Reese; his father, Charles Dill, Sr. and stepmother, Martinna Dill, of St. Louis and Vail; older brother, Charles Dill, Jr. (Cindy) of Stamford, Connecticut; three stepbrothers: John Howell, Jr. (Virginia) of St. Louis, Martin Howell (Jennifer) of Gillette, New Jersey, Andrew Howell of Vail, and by four nephews and three nieces. Services: A memorial service will be held in St. Louis at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 22, at the Ladue Chapel (9450 Clayton Road). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations may be made to MICDS (101 North Warson Road, St. Louis, MO 63124) for the Barney Dill Memorial Fund.
