Edward Allen Cloonan Obituary
Cloonan, Edward Allen 90, of Lee's Summit, MO passed away May 12, 2014. Visitation will be held on Thur. May 15th from 5-8pm at Langsford Funeral Home. Rosary will begin at 5pm. Funeral mass will be held on Fri. May 16th at 8:30am at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church. Burial at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 11am. He will be remembered for his love of his family, especially his Rose, and for his playful sense of humor. Ed graduated from Normandy High School in St. Louis, Mo. He attended Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., in pursuit of a degree in Mechanical Engineering, before enlisting in the Army in 1943. He landed in Normandy four months after D-Day and was wounded in Aachen, Germany, an act of valor for which he earned a Purple Heart. After the war, Ed held executive positions in the Engineering Department at Hussmann Refrigeration (St. Louis, Mo.), the Lozier Corporation (Omaha, Neb.) and Myers Industries (Cincinnati, Ohio). The position he bragged about most, however, was a self-appointed one: Midwest Regional VP of the Chocolate Ice Cream Lovers Association, for which he could produce a business card on command. He will be remembered for his love of dogs, Boxers especially; his proud Irish heritage; his photography he proudly boasted of taking photographs at hundreds of weddings and his woodworking a childhood hobby that blossomed after his retirement, when he built heirloom pieces for his family and friends. (Let's go make sawdust, he would tell his sons as they headed into the workshop.) And he'll be remembered for his Christmas gift each year: the infamous whatizit, an oddly wrapped and unlabeled package, partially torn into by various people at his gleeful direction until it finally ended up in the hands of its intended recipient. Ed was pre-deceased by his son Edward Jr. (Eddie), his parents, and his sister Dorothy. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life for 67 years, Rosemary Dolan; his children Kathy Mandacina, Kevin (Christine), Maureen Raffensperger, Tim (Shannon) and John (Nora); eleven grandchildren Phil Mandacina (Renee), Steve Mandacina (Kim), Brad Mandacina (Jill), Melanie Cloonan-Schulte (Dan), Julie Cloonan, Daniel Cloonan, Maddie Cloonan, Katie Cloonan, Adam Cloonan, Lisa Raffensperger and Erin Raffensperger (fiancé Bill Breon) eleven great-grandchildren (how he loved to talk with the greatgrands about the birds on his bird feeder!); and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church, 777 Blackwell Rd, Lees Summit, MO or the . Arrangements by Langsford Funeral Home, 115 sw 3rd St., Lee's Summit, MO 64063.
